APA Citation Generator for Book Chapters
The generator below is preset to APA (APA 7th edition) for a chapter in an edited book.
Check your reference against your institution's guidelines — lecturers sometimes vary the style.
Need a second pair of eyes on the whole assignment? RozContent’s Assignment Support checks referencing, proofreading and structure — first sample free.
Paste a URL, DOI, ISBN or title, or fill in the form yourself — the citation updates as you type, and you can copy it formatted, with italics and hanging indent intact, or as plain text. Under the tool you will find the APA rules for this source type, worked examples, and the mistakes students make most often.
The rules: APA format for book chapters
Template: Author, A. A. (Year). Title of chapter in sentence case. In E. E. Editor & F. F. Editor (Eds.), Title of book in sentence case (pp. first page–last page). Publisher Name.
- The chapter author comes first; the chapter title uses sentence case and is not italicised.
- The editors come after the word “In”, with their initials before their surnames — the opposite order from authors. Use (Ed.) for one editor and (Eds.) for two or more.
- The book title is italicised and in sentence case, and the chapter’s page range goes in brackets after it, introduced by pp.
- Give the publisher’s name only, with no location. If the chapter has its own DOI, end with https://doi.org/… and no full stop.
- In text, cite the chapter author, not the editor: (Nair, 2022).
Examples
Nair, P. (2022). Working memory in the classroom. In J. Whitfield & R. Delgado (Eds.), Advances in learning science (pp. 87–112). Northfield Press.
Ellery, T. (2023). Note-taking systems that work. In K. Doyle (Ed.), Study methods handbook (pp. 45–66). Ashgrove Press.
Common mistakes
- Citing the book’s editor as if they wrote the chapter — the chapter author always leads the entry.
- Writing the editors as “Whitfield, J.” — in the editor position the initials come first.
- Italicising the chapter title, or leaving out the chapter page range.
- Forgetting (Eds.) after the editors’ names.
