Paste a URL, DOI, ISBN or title, or fill in the form yourself — the citation updates as you type, and you can copy it formatted, with italics and hanging indent intact, or as plain text. Under the tool you will find the Chicago rules for this source type, worked examples, and the mistakes students make most often.
The rules: Chicago format for newspaper articles
Template: Author, First Name. “Title of Article in Headline Style.” Title of Newspaper, Month Day, Year. https://www.example.com/article
- Newspaper entries carry the full date — month, day and year — because newspapers are dated by the day.
- The article title goes in quotation marks, in headline-style capitalisation; the newspaper’s name is italicised.
- Page numbers are not given for newspaper articles in Chicago. If the piece ran in a named section, the section can be named after the date.
- For an article read online, end with the article’s full URL, including https://.
- In text: (Donovan 2025) — author and year, no comma.
Examples
Donovan, Rachel. “City Libraries Extend Hours for Exam Season.” The Daily Meridian, April 14, 2025. https://www.dailymeridian.news/2025/04/14/libraries-extended-hours
Moreno, Carlos. “Local Schools Adopt Later Start Times.” The Daily Meridian, September 30, 2024, Education section.
“University Funding Rises for Regional Campuses.” The Daily Meridian, February 3, 2025. https://www.dailymeridian.news/2025/02/03/university-funding
Common mistakes
- Adding page numbers — Chicago newspaper citations omit them.
- Giving only the year, or writing the date day-first in the MLA order.
- Linking to the newspaper’s homepage instead of the article.
- Putting the newspaper’s name in quotation marks instead of italics.
