Check your reference against your institution's guidelines — lecturers sometimes vary the style.
Need a second pair of eyes on the whole assignment? RozContent’s Assignment Support checks referencing, proofreading and structure — first sample free.
Paste a URL, DOI, ISBN or title, or fill in the form yourself — the citation updates as you type, and you can copy it formatted, with italics and hanging indent intact, or as plain text. Under the tool you will find the MLA rules for this source type, worked examples, and the mistakes students make most often.
The rules: MLA format for newspaper articles
Template: Author, First Name. “Title of Article in Title Case.” Title of Newspaper in Title Case, Day Month Year, p. page.
- The article title goes in quotation marks and title case; the newspaper’s name is italicised as the container.
- Give the full date as day, month, year, abbreviating longer month names (14 Apr. 2025).
- For a print article the location is the page: p. A3 for one page, pp. A1, A6 for an article that jumps. For an online article, give the URL without https:// instead.
- If the article is from a named edition or section, your instructor may also want it noted after the title.
- In text: (Donovan A3) for a paged print article, or (Donovan) for an online article with no pages.
Examples
Donovan, Rachel. “City Libraries Extend Hours for Exam Season.” The Daily Meridian, 14 Apr. 2025, www.dailymeridian.news/2025/04/14/libraries-extended-hours.
Moreno, Carlos. “Local Schools Adopt Later Start Times.” The Daily Meridian, 30 Sept. 2024, pp. A1, A6.
“University Funding Rises for Regional Campuses.” The Daily Meridian, 3 Feb. 2025, www.dailymeridian.news/2025/02/03/university-funding.
Common mistakes
- Giving only the year — newspaper entries carry the full date.
- Writing (Donovan, p. A3) in text — MLA uses no comma and no p. in the brackets.
- Linking the newspaper homepage instead of the article URL.
- Forgetting to abbreviate the month the MLA way (Sept., not Sep.).
