Paste a URL, DOI, ISBN or title, or fill in the form yourself — the citation updates as you type, and you can copy it formatted, with italics and hanging indent intact, or as plain text. Under the tool you will find the MLA rules for this source type, worked examples, and the mistakes students make most often.
The rules: MLA format for websites
Template: Author, First Name. “Title of Page in Title Case.” Site Name in Title Case, Publisher, Day Month Year, www.example.com/page.
- MLA builds every entry from core elements in a fixed order: Author. “Title of Source.” Container (the site), other contributors, version, number, publisher, publication date, location.
- For a webpage, the page title goes in quotation marks and title case, and the site name is italicised.
- If the publisher is the same as the site name, leave the publisher out. Give the date as day, month, year, abbreviating months longer than four letters (12 Mar. 2024).
- The location is the URL, written without https:// at the start. An access date (“Accessed 3 Mar. 2026.”) is optional and is most useful when the page has no publication date.
- In text, MLA uses the author and a page or location number with no comma and no “p.”: (Chen 4). A webpage with no page numbers is cited by author alone: (Chen).

Common mistakes
- Keeping https:// at the start of the URL — MLA drops the protocol.
- Writing the date in US order (March 12, 2024) — MLA puts the day first.
- Repeating the site name as publisher when the site publishes itself.
- Putting the page title in italics instead of quotation marks.
